We live in a fast-paced society. We are always moving, always busy. A few of us actually put aside time for self-care and healing. Most of us do not know how to be still and enjoy the present. Here are four tips to help you be present and live in the now:
1. Acknowledge and Transform Hurts from the Past.
Acknowledge past hurts, regrets, guilt, shame and mistakes that you have stored in your heart. Confess them and make the decision to transform them from negative to positive. Become an alchemist. Be creative, decide how you would like to transform your past.
Rather than release the negative, transform it into something positive and then release the positive into the world. Your reaction to those past hurts will no longer be the same, you will see them in a more positive light, you will begin to see life experiences differently.
Bitterness will transform into forgiveness, offences will transform into love, regrets will transform into growth. Your perspective on life will transform. Do not release negative into this world instead transform it into positive energy. After this transformation, you will have room in your life for new experiences and adventures, and perhaps renewed relationships. We can enjoy the present when we no longer live in the past.
“And we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
2. Release the Pressure of The Future.
Let go of unnecessary expectations. Sometimes we put too much pressure upon ourselves. These pressures and expectations can paralyze us. We can become so overwhelmed with the pressures of the future that we miss out on the present. Our minds begin to rule us, rather than us ruling our minds. Take control of your mind. Take it one step and one day at a time.
“And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure to his stature or to the span of his life. So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own.” Matthew 6:27, 34.
3. Stop Living in the Future.
Many of us say, “One day I will do this or that when…” When I move, when I get my degree, when I get a car, when I lose weight, when I get married, etc. How about NOW? Stop putting off things for tomorrow. There is no perfect day than today, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. The gift we all have is TODAY. Live now, live in the present, live today.
4. Enjoy the moment.
Be intentional with everything you do. When we are intentional we are conscious of every little thing, every detail. We notice the wind blowing against our skin when we go for a morning walk. We notice the warmth of the sun as we walk. We notice the birds chirping, the leaves blowing. We notice the smiles and the gratitude of others. We can notice these things even while working, driving, walking, shopping, etc. We notice these beautiful details because we intentionally decide to live in the present, to enjoy every moment. Have you ever driven home and you realize that you barely remember your trip home? You drove unconsciously, from memory and it has become habitual. When we drive intentionally and consciously we remember the ride; the trees, the sky, the people walking.
If we want to really enjoy life, we must learn to enjoy every moment. We must do so consciously and we must be intentional.
Live in the Now!
